These samples come from existing Pi Leo Academy NAPLAN-style maths content. The free check-up gives a fuller topic summary.

Sample 1 Multiplication and money

Ava gets 15 cents for every aluminium can recycled. She recycles 18 cans. How much money will she get?

A $2.70
B $270
C $18
D 270 cents
Show worked answer

Answer: A. $2.70

Multiply the amount per can by the number of cans: 15 cents × 18 = 270 cents. Convert to dollars by dividing by 100: 270 ÷ 100 = $2.70.

Sample 2 Money word problems

Ava buys socks for $3.85, a photo frame for $6.75 and a hoodie for $14.20, then pays with $30.00. What change should she receive?

A $24.80
B $3.60
C $5.20
D $30.00
Show worked answer

Answer: C. $5.20

First, find the total cost: $3.85 + $6.75 + $14.20 = $24.80. Then subtract from the amount paid: $30.00 - $24.80 = $5.20.

Sample 3 Decimals and patterns

The first number in a pattern is 2.15. Each next number is 0.2 less than the previous number. What is the third number?

A 1.95
B 1.75
C 1.55
D 2.55
Show worked answer

Answer: B. 1.75

First number: 2.15. Second number: 2.15 - 0.2 = 1.95. Third number: 1.95 - 0.2 = 1.75.

Sample 4 Multi-step word problems

Ava earns $2 per job. In one week she does 4 rubbish jobs, 5 dog walks and 3 dishwashing jobs. If she does the same jobs for 3 weeks, how much does she earn altogether?

A $72
B $36
C $24
D $74
Show worked answer

Answer: A. $72

Jobs per week: 4 + 5 + 3 = 12 jobs. Money per week: 12 × $2 = $24. For 3 weeks: $24 × 3 = $72.

Sample 5 Number patterns

Continue the pattern: 4, 12, 36, 108, ?

Show worked answer

Answer: 324

Each number is multiplied by 3 to get the next number: 4 × 3 = 12, 12 × 3 = 36, 36 × 3 = 108, 108 × 3 = 324.

Sample 6 Data totals

Favourite fruit tally: Apple = 17, Banana = 11, Orange = 13. How many students were asked altogether?

Show worked answer

Answer: 41

Add all the tallies together: 17 + 11 + 13 = 41. You are finding the total number of students surveyed.
