High-Frequency Words

VC2E4LY05 · Literacy · Conventions of Language

read and write high-frequency words including homophones and know how to use context to identify correct spelling

1. Learning goal

Parent-friendly goal:

Use context to spell common words and homophones correctly.

2. What your child needs to know

  • High-frequency words appear often in reading and writing.
  • Homophones sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
  • Context means the surrounding words that help you choose the right spelling.

3. Simple explanation

To choose there, their or they're, do not just listen to the sound. Read the whole sentence and think about meaning.

4. Examples

there

The bag is over there.

their

Their dog is friendly.

they're

They're going to the library.

5. Worked example

Choose a homophone

  1. Read the whole sentence.
  2. Think about the meaning needed.
  3. Choose the spelling that matches the meaning.
  4. Read the sentence again to check.

6. Common mistakes

  • Choosing by sound only.
  • Mixing up your and you're.
  • Forgetting apostrophes in contractions.

7. Parent teaching tips

  • Keep a personal homophone list with example sentences.
  • Ask your child to explain the meaning, not just spell the word.

8. Quick practice

Choose: ___ coming to dinner. (Their/They're/There)

Answer: They're.

They're means they are.

Choose: I left my hat over ___. (there/their)

Answer: there.
