One Maths Idea at a Time: A Simple Practice Routine

30 October 2026 · Pi Leo Academy

Fractions, multiplication, word problems and decimals can feel like a long list when they arrive together. For a home practice session, choose one clear idea and give it enough attention. The routine below is a suggestion you can shorten or adapt around schoolwork and rest.

Name today’s idea

Instead of “do some maths”, try “show how multiplication describes equal groups”. That gives your child a question to answer and gives you a way to recognise what they have understood. Put other topics aside until a later session.

Build the idea with a small example

Imagine 4 trays with 6 muffins on each tray. There are four equal groups of six, so the total is 4 × 6. Draw four rows of six dots, or use counters.

Split the rows into two pairs. Two rows contain 2 × 6 = 12 muffins. Another two rows contain 12 more. Altogether, 4 × 6 = 12 + 12 = 24. Splitting the calculation has changed the method, not the total.

Check using division: 24 muffins shared equally among 4 trays gives 24 ÷ 4 = 6 muffins per tray. Multiplication and division describe the same groups in different ways.

Use a four-part routine

  1. See it: draw or build the equal groups.
  2. Say it: name the number of groups and the amount in each.
  3. Try it: solve a similar example without copying.
  4. Check it: use the drawing or the related division fact.

Try 5 bags containing 6 marbles each. The total is 30. A check is 30 ÷ 5 = 6. A common mix-up is adding 5 + 6; that does not count five groups containing six each.

Finish by asking your child to explain one sentence: “I multiplied because…” Their explanation can guide your next session. There is no need to add extra topics just to make the session longer.
