Foundation Mathematics
Foundation is where children begin their maths journey. Learning is playful and hands-on — children count real objects, sort and compare, recognise shapes around them, and talk about when things happen and where they are.
Number and Algebra
- Count forwards and backwards to at least 20 using concrete objects
- Recognise numerals up to 20 and match them to quantities
- Subitise small groups — see 'how many' without counting one by one
- Compare groups using words like more, less, same and equal
- Combine and separate small groups as an introduction to addition and subtraction
- Notice and copy simple repeating patterns with colours, sounds and shapes
Measurement and Geometry
- Name everyday 2D shapes such as circles, squares, triangles and rectangles
- Recognise 3D objects like cubes, spheres and cylinders in real-world contexts
- Compare length, height, weight and capacity using informal language
- Put familiar events in order using words like before, after and next
- Describe location and direction using words like over, under, beside and in front
Statistics and Probability
- Sort objects into groups based on simple features like colour or size
- Ask a question and gather answers from classmates or family
- Show information using pictures, drawings or real objects
- Use everyday language like maybe, will or won't to describe what might happen
