Level 1 Mathematics

At Level 1, children build a confident sense of numbers to 100 and start using mental strategies for addition and subtraction. They also begin to describe time, measure, position and simple data.

Number and Algebra

  • Count, read and write whole numbers to at least 100
  • Skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s from zero and from any starting number
  • Add and subtract small numbers mentally using strategies like counting on and counting back
  • Understand that the order of parts doesn't change the total (for addition)
  • Solve simple word problems by choosing to add or subtract
  • Continue and describe growing and repeating patterns using shapes and numbers

Measurement and Geometry

  • Name and describe 2D shapes and 3D objects using features like sides and corners
  • Measure length, capacity and mass using uniform informal units
  • Tell the time on an analog clock to the hour and half hour
  • Name the days of the week and the months of the year
  • Give and follow directions to move around familiar spaces

Statistics and Probability

  • Gather simple data by asking questions and making lists
  • Display results using objects, drawings or simple picture graphs
  • Answer questions about what the data shows
  • Identify outcomes of everyday events as likely or unlikely
