From Maths Videos to Practice: Watch, Read, Try, Review
30 October 2026 · Pi Leo Academy
A video can make a maths idea easier to follow while the explanation is on screen. The next useful question is whether you can use that idea yourself. Try this four-part routine after a lesson: watch, read, try and review.

1. Watch for one idea
Before starting a lesson video, name what you want to understand. For fractions, that might be “how to count quarter steps”. Pause when the method needs a second look. You do not need to copy every spoken sentence; write the key idea in your own words.
2. Read a matching example
Open the study notes for the same topic. Look at the labels and the working. On a number line, the denominator tells you how many equal intervals fit into one whole. For quarters, divide the distance from 0 to 1 into four equal spaces.
3. Try a fresh question
Draw a line from 0 to 2. Mark quarter steps, then start at 0 and move forward five steps. Where do you land?
Count the positions: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4. Four quarters make one whole, so the fifth step lands at 5/4 = 1 1/4. Fractions are not limited to values less than one.
Watch the spacing: count the spaces you travel, not every tick mark including zero. Five quarter-sized jumps are five quarters, even though the drawing includes a starting mark.
4. Review before moving on
Cover the example and try seven quarter steps from zero. Answer: 7/4 = 1 3/4. If you wrote 1 2/4, count each jump again and check whether you included zero as a jump.
Write one short reminder beside your answer, such as “four quarter steps make one whole”. Next time, try a different number of steps before looking back at the solution. Use your working to decide whether to repeat this idea or move to another topic.
