Learn from Maths Mistakes: Find the Step to Revisit

30 October 2026 · Pi Leo Academy

When a maths answer is wrong, the whole topic does not necessarily need to be repeated. Look for the step where the working changed direction. A short, specific correction gives your child something useful to try next.

Start with a calm question

Ask, “Can you show me how you worked it out?” Keep the original working visible. It might reveal a misread number, a place-value mix-up or a calculation slip. These need different responses, so avoid treating every error as the same problem.

Follow a subtraction example

Suppose a learner writes 402 − 178 = 376. Rather than replacing the answer, first estimate: 400 − 180 is about 220. An answer near 376 is a signal to check the working.

Try counting up from 178 to 402 in manageable jumps:

  • 178 to 200 is 22.
  • 200 to 400 is 200.
  • 400 to 402 is 2.

The total difference is 22 + 200 + 2 = 224. Check by adding the difference back: 178 + 224 = 402. The estimate and the exact check now agree.

This counting-up method is one option. If your child uses a written subtraction method, keep hundreds, tens and ones aligned and check each regrouping step. Ask which part of their first method needs changing.

Record one useful reminder

Instead of writing “bad at subtraction”, write “check my answer by adding it back”. A practical reminder describes something the learner can do. Keep it beside one corrected example.

Now try 503 − 286. Counting up gives 14 to reach 300, then 200 to reach 500, then 3: 217. Check: 286 + 217 = 503.

If the new question is still difficult, use smaller numbers and revisit the explanation together. Praise the careful checking you can actually see. Practice is a chance to understand the method, not a requirement to be right on the first attempt.
