Maths for Everyone: Find the Right Starting Point
30 October 2026 · Pi Leo Academy
A year-level label is a helpful signpost, but a good starting question also needs to fit what your child currently understands. It is fine to revisit a foundation before attempting a more complicated task. Start with something they can explain, then change one part of the challenge.

Listen to the method, not just the answer
Ask your child to read a question aloud and describe their plan. A correct guess and a clear explanation tell you different things. When they are unsure, try a drawing or a smaller number instead of immediately supplying the answer.
A place-value example you can adapt
Which is larger: 0.6 or 0.45? A tempting mistake is to look at 6 and 45 as whole numbers and choose 0.45. Decimal places have different values, so first write both numbers in hundredths.
0.6 is six tenths, which is the same as sixty hundredths: 0.6 = 0.60. Now compare 60 hundredths with 45 hundredths. Since 60 is larger than 45, 0.6 > 0.45.
On a hundred-square, shade 60 small squares in one grid and 45 in another equal-sized grid. The extra shaded area makes the comparison visible.
Pick one of three next steps
- Need more support? Compare 0.2 and 0.5 using a strip divided into ten equal parts.
- Ready for a similar question? Compare 0.7 and 0.65. Answer: 0.7 is larger because 0.70 > 0.65.
- Ready to explain a connection? Ask why 0.8 and 0.80 name the same quantity.
These are learning choices, not a ranking of children. Keep the task manageable, and discuss persistent difficulties with your child’s teacher. When you choose the next topic, use what your child said and showed in their working.
