Timed NAPLAN-Style Maths Practice: A Parent Guide

30 October 2026 · Pi Leo Academy

A timer can help a student explore how they pace their work. It is less helpful when they are still trying to understand the maths. Begin with the method, then introduce timing when the learner is comfortable enough to use it.

This Short introduces timed practice at Pi Leo Academy. The companion routine below shows how to make a timed attempt useful without turning every maths session into a race.

Understand one question before timing a set

Suppose an activity begins at 2:35 pm and ends at 3:10 pm. Count forward in two jumps: 25 minutes to 3:00 pm, then 10 minutes to 3:10 pm. The total duration is 35 minutes. Writing 3.10 − 2.35 as if these were decimal numbers is not a valid method for clock time: an hour contains 60 minutes.

Once that reasoning makes sense, try a similar question independently. An activity from 9:45 am to 10:20 am also lasts 35 minutes: 15 minutes to the hour, then 20 more. The important skill is knowing how the time units work.

Use three stages

  1. Before the attempt: choose suitable material, check instructions and make sure the student understands the format.
  2. During the attempt: read carefully, show useful working and use the available review options. Work at a manageable pace.
  3. After the attempt: read the worked solutions. Sort errors into misunderstanding the question, choosing a method or making a calculation slip.

A score alone does not tell you which idea needs attention. If elapsed-time questions are difficult, return to the time notes rather than immediately repeating another whole paper. If a learner becomes upset, stop and adjust the activity.

Keep the purpose clear

NAPLAN is taken in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Pi Leo Academy provides independent NAPLAN-style practice; Year 4 materials are revision and preparation, not an official Year 4 NAPLAN test. A practice result does not predict an official result.

Explore the NAPLAN-style practice guide to choose the appropriate year. Use the topic notes below for the example in this article, then return to a timed activity when the underlying idea is clearer.

Keep the study notes beside you

Full study notes and their PDF downloads require an account with the relevant access. Open the notes page first if you need to sign in or choose a membership. These are companion resources for the activity in this article.
