Level 2 Mathematics

Level 2 extends number understanding into the hundreds and introduces early ideas of multiplication, division and halves. Children use standard measurements, read time to the quarter hour, and create simple graphs.

Number and Algebra

  • Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1000
  • Group numbers into hundreds, tens and ones to understand place value
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers using mental and written strategies
  • Explore multiplication as repeated addition and arrays
  • Share objects equally to introduce the idea of division
  • Recognise and find halves and quarters of shapes and collections
  • Count by 3s, 4s and other useful amounts

Measurement and Geometry

  • Compare and order shapes by features like the number of sides and corners
  • Measure length, mass and capacity using standard metric units (cm, kg, L)
  • Tell time to the quarter hour on analog and digital clocks
  • Name and order months and seasons and use a simple calendar
  • Interpret simple maps and give directions using quarter and half turns

Statistics and Probability

  • Pose a question, collect the data and display it in tally marks or a picture graph
  • Read and describe information shown on simple graphs
  • Identify everyday events that are certain, likely, unlikely or impossible
