Year 3 · Ages 8–9

Level 3 Mathematics

Level 3 is a year of growing fluency. Students practise times tables, work with fractions and money, measure with standard tools and start to read analog time to the minute. This is also a NAPLAN year.

Number and Algebra

  • Read, write and order numbers up to tens of thousands
  • Use place value to round numbers and check whether answers are reasonable
  • Recall multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Divide numbers using the inverse of multiplication and interpret remainders
  • Model and name halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and eighths
  • Count and calculate with Australian coins and notes
  • Describe number patterns and missing terms using the four operations

Measurement and Geometry

  • Classify 2D shapes and 3D objects by features like symmetry and parallel sides
  • Measure length, mass, capacity and temperature using standard units and tools
  • Find the perimeter of shapes by adding side lengths
  • Tell time to the minute on analog and digital clocks
  • Interpret grid references on maps and give directions
  • Recognise angles as a measure of turn and identify right angles

Statistics and Probability

  • Collect data through simple surveys and experiments
  • Display data using column graphs, picture graphs and tables
  • Interpret graphs to answer questions and compare categories
  • Talk about the chance of everyday events using words like certain, equal chance and impossible
