Year 4 · Ages 9–10
Level 4 Mathematics
At Level 4 students become efficient with mental and written computation. They extend their fraction and decimal understanding, explore angles and symmetry, and begin to interpret data in more than one form.
Number and Algebra
- Understand place value to tens of thousands and use it to round and estimate
- Fluently add and subtract whole numbers using written algorithms
- Know and apply multiplication facts up to 10 × 10
- Multiply two-digit numbers by single-digit numbers using written strategies
- Compare, order and count with fractions that have related denominators
- Recognise the decimal form of tenths and hundredths
- Solve simple problems involving Australian money, including giving change
Measurement and Geometry
- Compare and classify 2D shapes and 3D objects using geometric properties
- Measure and compare angles to a right angle using informal tools
- Find the area and perimeter of rectangles using counting and formulas
- Use am and pm to describe time and convert between units of time
- Interpret scale on simple maps and describe locations with coordinates
- Identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes
Statistics and Probability
- Choose an appropriate way to collect and record data for a question
- Construct and compare column graphs, picture graphs and tables
- Describe the chance of outcomes using fractions such as one in four
- Identify the difference between variables that can change and ones that don't
