Level 5 Mathematics

Level 5 extends computation to larger numbers and decimals, introduces percentage and factors, and develops stronger geometric reasoning. This is also a NAPLAN year, so fluency and problem solving are both in focus.

Number and Algebra

  • Identify factors and multiples and recognise prime and composite numbers
  • Use efficient written methods for all four operations with whole numbers
  • Add, subtract and compare decimals to two places
  • Find equivalent fractions and order fractions with unlike denominators
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
  • Understand percentage as parts out of 100 and link it to common fractions
  • Describe and continue number patterns with growing differences

Measurement and Geometry

  • Classify triangles and quadrilaterals by their sides and angles
  • Measure, estimate and compare angles using a protractor
  • Calculate perimeter and area of rectangles and use square centimetres and square metres
  • Convert between metric units of length, mass and capacity (e.g., mm, cm, m)
  • Find locations on a grid using coordinates and describe transformations
  • Describe translations, reflections and rotations on a simple grid

Statistics and Probability

  • Plan and carry out investigations by collecting and sorting data
  • Construct and interpret dot plots, column graphs and tables
  • Describe outcomes of simple chance experiments using fractions
  • List possible outcomes and compare what was expected with what actually happened
