Level 6 Mathematics

Level 6 brings fractions, decimals and percentages together, introduces integers, and develops thinking about algebraic rules. Students also work with formulas for area, volume and time, and analyse larger data sets.

Number and Algebra

  • Solve problems using factors, multiples, powers of 10 and order of operations
  • Multiply and divide decimals by powers of 10 and by whole numbers
  • Add and subtract fractions with related and unlike denominators
  • Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Locate positive and negative numbers (integers) on a number line
  • Use simple rules to describe patterns and relationships (introductory algebra)
  • Solve problems involving ratio, rate and percentages in everyday contexts

Measurement and Geometry

  • Investigate combinations of transformations on shapes
  • Use formulas to find the area of rectangles and triangles
  • Calculate the volume of rectangular prisms
  • Convert between 12- and 24-hour time and calculate elapsed time
  • Construct 2D shapes from 3D objects and vice versa
  • Find locations on a four-quadrant coordinate plane

Statistics and Probability

  • Interpret secondary data sources such as news graphs and tables
  • Create and compare side-by-side column graphs
  • Calculate and use the mean, median and mode to describe data
  • Compare observed frequencies with expected probabilities for simple experiments
