Year 7 · Ages 12–13

Level 7 Mathematics

Level 7 is the first year of secondary maths and introduces formal algebra, integers, ratios and index notation. Geometry becomes more deductive, and students begin to analyse data using range, mode, median and mean. This is also a NAPLAN year.

Number and Algebra

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide with positive and negative integers
  • Use index notation and simple laws of indices with whole number bases
  • Find equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages and use them in problem solving
  • Work with ratios, rates and proportions in real-world contexts
  • Introduce pronumerals and write simple algebraic expressions and equations
  • Solve one-step and two-step linear equations
  • Describe linear number patterns using words and algebra

Measurement and Geometry

  • Use angle facts for parallel lines, triangles and quadrilaterals to find unknown angles
  • Calculate areas of triangles, parallelograms and composite shapes
  • Calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and convert between metric units
  • Describe transformations using coordinates (translation, reflection, rotation)
  • Construct geometric figures using rulers, protractors and basic tools

Statistics and Probability

  • Construct and interpret frequency tables, dot plots and stem-and-leaf plots
  • Calculate the mean, median, mode and range of small data sets
  • List sample spaces for simple chance experiments
  • Assign probabilities to outcomes as fractions, decimals and percentages
