Level 8 Mathematics

Level 8 deepens algebra by introducing distributive laws, factorising and linear graphs. Students work with irrational numbers, apply Pythagoras' theorem, and start using two-way tables in probability.

Number and Algebra

  • Work with rational and irrational numbers and estimate their values
  • Apply the four operations to integers and simple algebraic expressions
  • Expand brackets and collect like terms in algebraic expressions
  • Factorise simple algebraic expressions using common factors
  • Solve linear equations, including those with pronumerals on both sides
  • Plot linear relationships on a coordinate plane and read values from graphs
  • Apply percentage increase and decrease to real-world problems

Measurement and Geometry

  • Calculate the circumference and area of circles
  • Find the surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders
  • Use Pythagoras' theorem to find unknown sides in right-angled triangles
  • Identify congruent figures and use the tests for triangle congruence
  • Investigate properties of quadrilaterals and establish relationships between them

Statistics and Probability

  • Explore variation in samples drawn from a population
  • Use back-to-back stem-and-leaf plots to compare two data sets
  • Construct two-way tables to represent compound events
  • Calculate probabilities of complementary events and simple compound events
