Year 9 · Ages 14–15
Level 9 Mathematics
Level 9 introduces deeper algebra, trigonometry and coordinate geometry. Students expand and factorise expressions, use exponent laws with integer indices, and apply right-angled trigonometry to real-world problems. This is also a NAPLAN year.
Number and Algebra
- Apply the index laws to algebraic expressions with integer exponents
- Expand, simplify and factorise linear and simple quadratic expressions
- Solve linear equations and linear inequalities
- Find the gradient, intercepts and equation of a straight line
- Solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations graphically and algebraically
- Model and solve problems using direct proportion
- Solve problems involving simple interest and growth/decay in money contexts
Measurement and Geometry
- Use Pythagoras' theorem to solve problems in two dimensions
- Find unknown sides and angles of right-angled triangles using sine, cosine and tangent
- Calculate the surface area and volume of right prisms, cylinders and composite solids
- Apply similarity and scale factors to figures and real-world problems
- Use coordinate geometry to find the length and midpoint of intervals
Statistics and Probability
- Identify everyday situations involving two-step chance experiments
- Construct and interpret tree diagrams and tables for compound events
- Collect, summarise and analyse data using the five-number summary
- Construct and interpret box plots and histograms
- Compare the shape, centre and spread of numerical data sets
